Chakar Low & Partners

Chakaravarthi Thillainathan graduated with LLB (Hons) from the University of London & completed his Masters In Law with the specialisation in Maritime Law. Pursuant to this he completed his Certificate in Legal Practice and was called to the Malaysian Bar in 2010. Since the start of practice, he handled civil and general litigation matters involving banking, land and insurance among many other matters.

Chakra, as he is known amongst peers and clients alike, is involved in the following types of legal practice:-

  • Head of the Admiralty, Maritime and Shipping Department at Messrs Low & Partners currently handling various types of cases involving admiralty, shipping and maritime insurance law as well as shipping arbitration matters. He has also the authored over 80 articles on shipping and maritime law
  • Head of Medical Law Department at Messrs Low & Partners and acts on behalf of patients in various types of Medical negligence claims as well as Patient complaints to Malaysian Medical Council with a commendable record of no convictions against his clients and also various medical negligence cases;
  • Successfully represented numerous foreign and local clients in wide range of corporate and litigation matters including the following types of cases:-

    - Shareholder and director disputes
    - Contractual disputes
    - Commercial disputes
    - Employment disputes
    - Partnership disputes
    - Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) disputes
    - Debt and payment disputes
    - Property disputes
    - Advisory capacity

  • Has a strong grasp of procedural and substantive law in connection to general litigation due to more than a decade of service as legal practitioner.
  • Was also involved in providing legal advisory services to local community projects in the vicinity of Petaling Jaya for the betterment of the residents in those areas as well as a legal advisory services to numerous Resident’s Associations in Kuala Lumpur

Memberships and Appointments

  • Appointed the first Chairman of Sustainable Petaling Jaya Association for the term 2023/2024 and 2024/2025. The goal of the Association is to provide sustainable solution to the City of Petaling Jaya.
  • Member of the Bar Council Shipping and Admiralty Law Committee since 2022/2023 term;
  • Member of the Bar Council Arbitration and Construction Law Committee since 2022/2023 term;
  • Was appointed as an auditor for the BP-Guild Malaysia for the terms commencing 2017 to 2019, 2019 to 2021 and 2021 until 2023.
  • Qualified to be an Associate of the prestigious Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) (UK) since 2022.
  • A member of the International Malaysian Society of Maritime Law since 2022.
  • He is also the Treasurer for the Malaysian Ceylonese Provident Fund for 2024/2025 term
